Environmental Health and Safety Officer: The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Officer will develop, support and maintain the Company’s EHS programs, monitor injury and illness prevention and emergency response procedures and will be responsible for informing, training and educating all employees about safety procedures and issues. The EHS Officer will also be responsible for keeping the company in compliance with all environmental standards and regulations, by issuing appropriate communications and postings.
Essential Functions:
- Develop and implement biosafety and chemical safety manual, as well as provide support for laboratory-specific manuals
- Develop and implement programs directed to increase safety awareness and reduce injury and exposure to hazardous materials
- Write, review and revise EHS safety policies and procedures
- Ensure annual employee training on OSHA regulations and safe work behavior
- Ensure safety training for new employees, temporaries, and contractors, as necessary
- Maintain training records for regulatory compliance
- Provide technical advice and support to Biosafety Officer and Chemical Hygiene Officer, and ensure site compliance with applicable regulations and implementation of these programs
- Conduct Safety meetings and walk-through safety surveys
- Identify deficiencies and take corrective actions
- Provide safety guidance and assistance to all employees at all Company sites
- Maintain and manage SDS (Safety Data Sheet) files, making them easily accessible by all laboratory employees
- Track and summarize chemical inventories throughput for all operations
- Provide assistance and/or perform all regulatory inspection and reporting
- Ensure all environmental files are current, up to date, and in compliance
- Track new regulations and assess impact to operations
- Conduct waste management compliance inspection program to adhere with state and federal guidelines
- Work with and assist HR department in managing work-related injuries
- Travel as needed to support other BioLegend sites or attend meetings as required (0 to 10%)
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor of Science or better in Biology, Chemistry or Environmental Science or related field.
Knowledge & Abilities:
- Ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of the principles of biosafety and chemical safety in biomedical and chemical laboratories, including containment and risk assessment
- Knowledge and understanding of federal and state regulations, including OSHA, NIH, DOT, EPA, and CDC
- Skilled in developing safety and emergency response policies, procedures, and guidance documents
- Use of scientific rules and methods to identify root cause and solve problems
- Use of logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problem solving
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, hands-on environment while managing multiple assignments with strict deadlines
- Offering consistent and credible guidance on EHS related matters and building trust and respect with employees
Experience
- Major coursework in Occupational Health & Safety
- 5 years of experience working in Biotechnology or Life Science industry in developing and implementing biological safety program policies, procedures and requirements.
